How will I know if its the Real Thing or a Quality Replica ?

It used to be easy to see the difference between real and fake Breitlings with a little bit of knowledge, but now even the pros can be fooled. This article was written to help you identify the errors in the very well made fakes on the market so you don't get duped.

There are a few ways to see what the differences are in the high end quality replica watches usually:

Date Font

Date font is never correct between the replicas and the real models, unless it is a modification done afterward by modelers out there that try to improve the manufactured fakes.

Notice that the real date font fills the space a little bit better than the fake one. It is typical of Breitling date fonts to try and fill the space with the number evenly.

Luminous Paint

One of most poorly done things on the poor quality fake Breitlings is the luminous paint. They are rarely painted on properly and typically do not reach all the edges of the indexes that they are painted on.

The example below shows a real Breitling Chronomat evolution and a fake, and how the paint on the fake leaves out little bits around the edges and corners due to poor quality control and craftsmanship.

This appears to be a common theme among the fakes and I think should be quite reliable in identifying them as of this writing.

Movement

Usually, fakes do not have decorated movements, however this is beginning to change. Most fakes have a plain Chinese made copy of the movement, as shown below.

More and more I am seeing decorated fake movements, that are not really decorated properly. As you can see, the real Breitling Caliber 13 movement above has the Breitling Logo in block letters. The fake ones I have seen have all had the Breitling Script logo rather than the block letters.

Some models of real Breitling have the script logo on the rotor decoration of the movement as well, so the script is not a guarantee of a fake movement either. The machine turned decoration on the movement does appear to be missing however on the fakes, even with the decorated rotor. As you can see above there should be extensive pearlage and circular patterning on the authentic movement.

Bracelet

The Bracelets are often the easiest things to spot the authenticity of, however that doesn't mean that the watch is real or fake either, as a fake bracelet can be put on a real watch, and vice verse.

Below are pictures of the screw holes on the opposite side of the bracelet where the screws go in. These examples are of a Pro and Pro II bracelet. Notice on the fake, the dimples are curved, whereas on the real one, they are flat. Depending on the bracelet you get (pilot, navi, pro, etc) the real bracelet may be completely flat or slightly curved in the dimple. The replica models however always have a very curved appearance as you can see from the photo.

There is also a bit more visible on the back of where the logos are stamped on the fake bracelets. The real bracelets often have a little bit of visible stamping on the back, but not nearly as much as the fake bracelets as you can see from the photos below. This is not definitive as the real ones have a bit sometimes as well, just not as much as the fakes.

A tourbillon is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement( the device which converts continuous rotational motion into an oscillating or back and forth motion). Invented in 1795 by French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, a tourbillon counters the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, ostensibly in order to negate the effect of gravity when the timepiece (and thus the escapement) is rotated. Originally an attempt to improve accuracy, tourbillons are still included in some expensive modern watches as a novelty and demonstration of watchmaking virtuosity. The mechanism is usually exposed on the watch's face to show it off.

How it works

Gravity was thought to have a very adverse effect on the accuracy of time pieces at the time of the invention of the tourbillon, particularly because pocketwatches were often less accurate than stationary clocks of the same construction. The prevailing theory amongst horologists of the time was that pocket watches suffered from the effects of gravity since they were usually carried in the same pocketed position for most of the day, which was vertical, and then held in a different position while being read. Because the movements of pocket watches and similar pieces were oriented with respect to the cases and the dials, their movements were positioned with the axes of motion perpendicular to their faces. This meant that when the timepiece was placed vertically, the axis of motion of the movements would be parallel to the ground, and thus the force of gravity. In such a position, the force of gravity would affect the motion of parts of the movement differently when the parts were in different positions (i.e., moving with gravity or moving against it), which would cause variations in the rate the movement, which in turn would affect the timepieces' accuracy. If adjusted for one position, the rate would change when the piece was kept in a different position, such as when being held to be read or when placed on a table at night. In a tourbillon, the entire escapement assembly rotates, including the balance wheel, the escape wheel, the hairspring, and the pallet fork, in order to average out the effect of gravity in the different positions. The rate of rotation varies per design but has generally become standardized at one rotation per minute. Most tourbillons use standard swiss lever escapements, but some have a detent escapement, and others contain novel designs, such as the Audemars Piguet Millenary for example.

The tourbillon is considered to be one of the most challenging of watch mechanisms to make (although technically not a complication itself) and is valued for its engineering and design principles. The first production tourbillon mechanism was produced by Breguet for Napoleon in one of his carriage clocks (travel clocks of the time were of considerable weight, typically weighing almost 200 pounds).

Actually, this carriage clock was equipped with a repeater (not a tourbillon) and calendar. Completed in 1796, this was the first carriage clock ever made by Breguet. And this carriage clock ordered by Napoleon for his trip to Egypt battel was very handful & light in weight. Indeed first tourbillon regulator of Breguet combined with one of the first works of Arnold. Homage by Breguet to the cherished memory of Arnold offered to his son in the year 1808. (Daniels suggests Breguet thought of this as his first tourbillon because he regarded the 1800 one as a mere prototype.) The watch is now in the British Museum.

Modern tourbillon watches

In modern mechanical watch designs, a tourbillon is not required to produce a highly accurate timepiece; there is even debate amongst horologists as to whether tourbillons ever improved the accuracy of mechanical time pieces, even when they were first introduced, or whether the time pieces of the day were inherently inaccurate due to design and manufacturing techniques. Nevertheless, the tourbillon is one of the most valued features of collectors' watches and premium timepieces (Ref. August 2006 WatchTime article Girard-Perregaux's Tourbillon Icon), possibly for the same reason that mechanical watches fetch a much higher price than similar quartz watches that are much more accurate. High-quality tourbillon wristwatches, which are usually made by the Swiss luxury watch industry, are very expensive, and typically retail for at least thousands of dollars or euros, with much higher prices in the tens of thousands of dollars/euros being common. A recent renaissance of interest in tourbillons has been met by the industry with increased availability of time pieces bearing the feature, with the result that prices for basic tourbillon models have receded somewhat in recent years (where as previously they were very rare, in either antiques or new merchandise); however, any time piece that has a tourbillon will cost a great deal more than an equivalent piece without the feature.

Modern implementations typically allow the tourbillon to be seen through a window in the watch face. In addition to enhancing the charm of the piece, the tourbillon can act as a second hand for some watches as it generally rotates once per minute. However some Tourbillons spin faster(Gruebel & Forseys 24second tourbillon for example.). 	Rolex Explorer I The Rolex Explorer is a simple yet effective design. Its simplicity makes it easier to replicate than other Rolex models. Unlike the Rolex Submariner that has crown guards and a cyclops date magnifier, this design lacks the elements that are the most difficult to replicate.
	Chopard Gran Turismo XL The GT XL is a design that is based on a ETA movement as a genuine watch, which makes it easier to replicate. The crystal and cyclops are highly accurate, as is the date wheel and caseback on the higher-end examples of this replica. This is a chronograph movement that is up for much debate. Has subdials at 12, 9, & 6 that dictate 30 minute counter, running seconds, and 12 hours counter respectively. Reliability is constantly up for debate, but the general consensus is that if the watch has running seconds at 9, and is well maintained, you will have a replica that will be reliable. The number one rule with an Asian 7750 is to NEVER change the date while the time is between 10 o’clock & 2 o’clock. Also never reset the chronos while they are running. Both actions may cause damage to the movement. The 7750 with seconds running at 6 is generally the same as the running seconds at 9 version, with an additional module that allows for the seconds to run on the 6 o’clock subdial. Back to Top 6497 Hand Wind Movements The 6497 movement is used in larger hand-wind watches such as Panerai, IWC FA Jones, Omega Railmaster and other large replica watches. There are both "Asian" and "Swiss" 6497 movements available at differing prices. The average difference is about $100. A simple rule to always follow; wind the watch until it stops and you can't wind it anymore. Until and unless you have reached the full stop and can't wind anymore, you have not fully wound the watch. A watch with a 28,800 BPH ticks and tocks 28,800 times per hour, meaning the balance wheel makes this number of swings clockwise and counter-clockwise every hour. Each swing is a "Tic" (or Toc) and the number per hour, divided by 60 minutes, and 60 seconds, will tell you how smooth the seconds hand runs. In this instance, you have 8 "Ticks/Tocks" per second, and the hand will appear to "Sweep" across the dial, this is the smoothest you can get. Other common BPH are 21,600 (7750, Venus 175) 6 ticks per second, and 18,000 BPH (ETA 6497-1 manual wind PAM models), 2.5 ticks per second. This is why older 7750 movements do not sweep as smoothly as ETA movements or newer 7750 movements. A watch which is indicated on our site as water resistant is designed to withstand accidental splashes of water only. Do not submerge such a watch. Higher levels of water resistance are possible, please email us regarding specific models. There are a variety of ways to make a watch water resistant. All such watches use rubber gaskets or "O" rings to seal the case back and crown tube. A watch with a back that screws onto the case provides a higher degree of water resistance. One unfortunate fact of life for those of use who like Japanese watches is that the most interesting models are often only sold in Japan. There are internet resellers of Japanese models, but you've then got warranty difficulties if service is ever required, as the domestic service centers will require you to ship the watch back to Japan.

I bring this up because of the wonderful Citizen PMT56-2711 from the Promaster line. This particular watch is no longer in production (though it's still available here and there if you look hard enough), and has been superseded by models adding radio synchronization and such (like the new Citizen Attesa). It's an analog quartz watch, solar-powered, with a blue face and titanium case, and there's something very elegant in its simplicity.

Things I like about this watch:

Surface-hardened titanium case and band, trade name "Duratect". Almost impossible to scratch, and with the brushed finish, it yields a subtle, low-key metal that's quite attractive.
Domed sapphire crystal. Again, almost impossible to scratch. The interior has an anti-glare coating, which reduces reflections. The doming also reduces reflections and makes it easier to read under water.
Perpetual calendar. Although this makes for an involved setting procedure, it's nice not to have to worry about resetting the date at the end of some months.
Eco-Drive. This is Citizen's solar power technology. The face of the watch is a solar cell with a subtle hexagonal pattern that also serves to add visual detail to the dial. The battery on this one is good for five years, so even if you forget it in a drawer, you're unlikely to need to reset it!
200m water resistant (about 650 feet). Several people use this watch for SCUBA diving; it's more than enough for any use you're likely to have.
Travel friendly. Unlike most watches, you can change the hour without stopping the watch. This is fantastic when traveling. You pull out the crown, press the button while rotating the stem, and the hour advances. I used this when going from the west coast to South America, and I can testify to its usefulness. With other watches, more than once I've set the local time wrong due to jet lag haze. Also nice for accuracy fans, since the seconds and minutes are not affected.
Power saving modes. This adds some personality to the watch, and makes it fun to interact with. After a minute or two of darkness, the second hand stops at 12 and stays there until light returns. Meanwhile, the minute and hour hands continue to display the correct time. If light remains off for three days, all the hands stop, only to spin to the correct time when you take it out of the drawer. These makes the watch seem a bit more alive -- more than once, I extend my arm and watched the second hand wake up from falling asleep under my coat. The watch will warn you if the battery was depleted far enough that it lost time.
Luminosity. The face has large, clear markers with Luminova on them, making it easy to read at night. The second hand is not lumed, instead having a painted red tip. Perhaps they left the lume off the second hand due to the power saving feature above (you only need lume in the dark, and in the dark, the second hand doesn't move), but either way I rarely need to see seconds in the dark, anyway.
Readability. The face is a mixture of military style numbers (sans-serif, upright and distinct) with an aviator-style inverted triangle at the 12 o'clock position. The hands are simple white with clean lines and contrast nicely against the blue dial. These, combined with the domed crystal, make for a watch that can be read at a glance at a wide range of angles. Day or night, no problem. The red-tipped second hand is a nice touch, too.
Weight and size. The combination of 40mm size and titanium makes this watch seem quite light when you pick it up. I've been wearing a much heavier steel watch, but once I adapted, I quite like the reduction in mass. You just don't notice wearing it at all, even on the matching metal (titanium) bracelet.
The blue of the dial is gorgeous and unobtrusive. They put the minute markers on the chapter ring, so there's a nice balance of empty space and text.

The only thing I dislike about the Citizen Promaster PMT56-2711 is that the setting procedure is complex, and it's easy to screw it up. I initially did the guy thing of "pull the stem and start fiddling" which subsequently required 30 minutes to correct. You have to know the time, date, month, and how many years since the last leap year to set it correctly. All of this is done via the stem and a single button, with no LCD display! In its defense, this is something you should never have to do, since the perpetual calendar is good until 2099.

Other things of note:

The minute hand moves every 15 seconds. This is another power-saving feature, but kind of odd. Not sure what I think of it. I'm used to mechanicals, where its always moving, ever-so-slowly.
The style is quite adaptable. It's legibility makes it good for exercise, but the shape and low-key appearance mean that you can wear it with a dress shirt and it looks great. It's probably too sporty to be an ultra-formal watch, but the Promaster is appropriate for all occasions I need to be concerned with.
It would be nice if it had a bezel to use for timing since the current one is just dead, unused space.

Overall, I love this watch. It's smaller than the current mega-size craze, which initially took some getting used to, but is wonderful once you do. It slips easily under a dress shirt, it's tough enough to climb, dive, bike, or swim in, it's readable anywhere, and it is well finished and detailed. Since it's both discontinued and was never available in the US, it's not easy to find, but there are still a few out there to be had if you know where to look, and well worth snatching up if you come across one.

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is a variety of vacuum deposition and is a general term used to describe any of a variety of methods to deposit thin films by the condensation of a vaporized form of the material onto various surfaces (e.g., onto semiconductor wafers). The coating method involves purely physical processes such as high temperature vacuum evaporation or plasma sputter bombardment rather than involving a chemical reaction at the surface to be coated as in chemical vapor deposition. The term physical vapor deposition appears originally in the 1966 book “Vapor deposition” by CF Powell, JH Oxley and JM Blocher Jr, but Michael Faraday was using PVD to deposit coatings as far back as 1838.

Variants of PVD include, in order of increasing novelty:

Know the real models -- browse the manufacturer catalogs and the display collections of an authorized dealer. Handle the real thing. Be familiar with not only the face of the watch, but also the bracelet, clasp, and the back of the watch. All these things will be slightly different on fake watches. Sometime it is so close it is almost impossible to tell just by looking.

Understand that manufacturer catalogs and websites usually do not show all the models and variations they make. So just because you do not see an item in a catalog or on an official website is not by itself proof that a watch is fake.

Look at the zOwie Rogues Gallery of Fakes page for photos showing some of the tell-tale incorrect features on some of the counterfeit Omega watches we've seen. Even if you are interested in other brands of watches, the illustrations of fake Omega watches will show you what types of errors and omissions to look for on any fake. Are the logos and face details incorrectly or poorly reproduced watches?

Through years of studing fakes and talking with people about them, we have never heard any good justification for buying or wearing them... only excuses why some people believe they deserve the perception of owning 'luxury' products without having to go to the effort and expense to buy the real things.

People who buy fakes seem to have a contradicting thought process they go through. They act like it is 'only a name' when they choose a counterfeit product with a premium brand name on it. Counterfeit buyers seem to be ignorant of or ignore the real merits that make the genuine item far more valuable than the fakes--they just consider one watch to be about the same as any other. Why do people buy fakes and what does it say about them?

Through years of studying fakes and talking with people about them, we have never heard any good justification for buying or wearing them... only excuses why some people believe they deserve the perception of owning 'luxury' products like replica watches without having to go to the effort and expense to buy the real things.

People who buy fake watches seem to have a contradicting thought process they go through. They act like it is 'only a name' when they choose a counterfeit product with a premium brand name on it. Counterfeit buyers seem to be ignorant of or ignore the real merits that make the genuine item far more valuable than the fakes--they just consider one watch to be about the same as any other. this is not true at all.............consumers feel they should not have overpay for a product just because of its name.
